P Mauriat PMXA-67R Equinox Alto Saxophone

P Mauriat PMXA-67R Equinox Alto Saxophone

An EXCLUSIVE model to Sax.co.uk – the Equinox Alto!

A variant on the phenomenally successful PMXA 67R model, this specially commissioned sax showcases all the tonal beauty of the original, but in a resplendent new finish to die for!

Description

The PMXA-67R is the leading alto sax from P Mauriat, delivering on sound and playability in equal measures, and it, therefore, becomes a very natural choice of instrument to use as a basis for this new exclusive model, the Equinox.

The 67R model elevated P. Mauriat to sit alongside the World's best. Described in reviews as the closest to the legendary Selmer Mk6 - praise indeed!

The finish on the Equinox sets it apart from the other 67r models; it has a vintage yet modern appearance at the same time.

Tone-wise the sound is rich and powerful, with an abundance of depth in every note. The 67R range is known for delivering a huge dynamic range with a massive amount of colour and tonal variety. The addition of a large bell just helps to amplify these qualities even further.

It is rare to find rolled tone holes on a modern sax and these give a noticeably quieter key action and extended pad life. P Mauriat is proud to manufacture saxophones using structurally integrated, unitary rolled tone holes, as opposed to using the ‘cheat’ method of soft soldering a separate ring onto the body.

Review

I am personally extremely excited about the release of this new saxophone from P Mauriat. Last year the company came to us and asked about producing an exclusive model that will just be sold at Sax.co.uk and they were keen to obtain our input as to what would work/what is needed etc. Well, the results are in, and we have an absolute beauty! I just love the way this new model plays AND Looks! For me it has bags of depth and tonal layers.

When blowing on it with my Meyer 7 I found there to be a satisfying blend of core and body but infused with a silky sheen over the top. There is definitely something unique in the Mauriat sound when dealing with their pro-end horns, something that picks up a similar vein to the best vintage saxes, but with the addition of extra power and playability. Something else that has struck me about Equinox is the level of quality in relation to the key work and mechanism; the engineering is solid and refined, while the key action is smooth and consistent. They really have covered all the bases with this new sax and what makes it even more tantalising is that it is highly affordable! - Jim Cheek
